As we did last year, we planned to spend Christmas Day at our home and then venture off to see the Andrews for a fabulous Christmas dinner. Seems easy, right? Not this year!
Christmas dinner was set to go at the lakehouse in Quebec and as we watched the snow fall all day, we wondered what our trip there would be like. We were already thankfully and thoughtfully provided with a 4-wheel drive vehicle from Ron and Menna, then as we left we received text and voice mail messages from the family containing tips on how to traverse the roads on our way.
With steering wheel held tight, we made our way to the lakehouse on the dark, parking at the top of a huge hill and attempting to walk down to the Christmas merriment that awaited us down below. We say attempting because within 15 feet, Daddy and Oliver wiped out, followed shortly after by Mommy and Isabelle. Good thing neither one of us was carrying the cake!
With the help of gravity and Matt and Trystan, we finally reached the front door safe and sound and shared in the Christmas cheer with everyone. The boys went back up to retrieve the food and presents and we had a great night around the new wood stove before digging into a delicious dinner with great food and great conversation.
We were thrilled to share in Madoc's first Christmas and to catch up with good friends on how their day went and their plans for the holidays. Isabelle and Oliver were ecstatic to show off their presents (and to collect a few more!).
With the snow continuing to fall, we wanted to make sure we got home so we made sure we had the car keys and piled into Matt's truck for a heavy-metal soundtracked trip to the top of the hill. We dug through the snow and miraculously discovered Oliver's red hockey stick that was dropped in the dark earlier (crisis averted!), then we buckled in and headed home. Adventure over....or so we thought.
We pulled up to our house, askied each other for the keys and to our dismay, neither one of us had them. Apparently one of the boys grabbed them from the car unbeknownst to us and they were back at the lakehouse. After some panic and handwringing over what to do, Mommy discovered a way into the house and all was resolved with great relief. What a saviour!
Mommy delivered a Christmas miracle to cap off a crazy but fun day and we all fell asleep as soon as our head hit the pillow. We are so thankful for Boxing Day, a day to get settled, get packed and go NOWHERE. Bring on the holiday vacation, but give us one day to rest first!
