It's the thing you always know is possible, but are never quite prepared for when it actually happens. The phone rings and it's the daycare saying there's been an accident with your little boy. Oliver was playing outside and got the gate of the toddler play area right in the face, opening up a big gash above his lip. He was upset to say the least but had settled down and even seemed a little bit happy to be leaving daycare early! Mommy and Daddy rushed him over to CHEO where we knew he would be in good hands. After checking him out, they determined that he would need a stitch and given how he is not the biggest fan of doctors (ask his own Dr. Chan!), they felt it best that he gets sedated. Little did we know that the IV portion of the sedation would be much worse than the actual sutures! What a harrowing experience for Oliver as well as Mom and Dad. They searched long and hard to find a vein in his chubby little hands and eventually were successful, but not after some stressful times for everyone in the room. It had been 6 hours since the boy ate or drank, and even longer since he had slept, but finally the drugs took over and he was dazed enough to get worked on. Two quick stitches went in, but not without more protests from the tough little dude. It was finally over and Oliver had a chance to nap, although not as long as we thought he would, turns out he shares the high tolerance for medicine with his Mom. In any case, the brave patient was discharged and slept a bit more, then seemed much better tonight, especially with a special milkshake treat soothing his spirits. Now he sleeps away, unaware of how sore he may be tomorrow but still tougher than most adults would be. What a brave little trooper we have.
Hits the spot. So great to see a big smile on his face.
Isabelle, on the other hand, had a fabulous day from start to finish! Picked up at daycare early by Caitlin, she then went out for french fries for lunch, then to see the Tangled movie (additonal popcorn and pop there!), then to Caitlin's place where she waited out Oliver's treatment. She capped that off with a pizza dinner and the best treat she could imagine, a personalized video message from Santa himself. Amazing to see the joy in her eyes as he spoke to her directly, she was beside herself and is now begging for Christmas to arrive. Only 10 more days to go, little princess, we are as excited as you are!
